Why 4×4 Kigali Car Hire from Merry 4×4 Car hire.
Rwanda undoubtedly has some of the best trunk road in Africa. Rwanda is fairly small with a well-maintained tarmac road network especially along the major country’s routes and in all the major towns. However, Rwanda’s terrain is mostly hilly with some areas especially in the north very mountainous and steep making the need for a fulltime 4×4 like the Toyota Rav4 or the fully loaded Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 an absolute necessity. We do not recommend travel across Rwanda in a saloon or sedan car as it wouldn’t cope extremely well in the unpaved, steep, muddy or very hilly roads to major Rwanda visitor attractions e.g Nyungwe, Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park and the long winding steep and slopping roads as you drive from Kigali to the Uganda/Rwanda border crossing at Katuna and Cyanika.
The roads are even trickier to navigate Rwanda’s roads during the rainy seasons (March–May and September–December). In addition, it is preferable to have safari customized vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser that have pop up or open roofs for easy game viewing and photography especially if one is on safari game drives in the Akagera game reserve.

Essential Rules for the road;
- Drive on the Right: Rwanda uses right-hand traffic (RHT), left hand driver vehicles like mainland Europe or the USA.
- Speed Cameras: Rwanda utilizes a sophisticated Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) system. Cameras are everywhere, and fines are processed digitally. Urban areas: 40 km/h. Highways: 60–80 km/h
